How does a man’s arteries block?

Peripheral artery disease is a common disease that leads to narrowing of the arteries of the man, and may eventually cause arterial blockages in the man, so how does that happen?

The importance of arteries is because they are the blood vessels responsible for transporting blood rich in oxygen and nutrients from the heart to all parts of the body, and healthy arteries are smooth and flexible from the inside, which prevents blood from clotting or clotting, and promotes stable and stable blood flow.

But the arteries that supply the legs and feet may narrow, in a condition known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), which reduces blood flow to them, so the blood will not be able to reach the nerves and other tissues, and this may damage these tissues.

This narrowing occurs slowly and gradually, and its severity increases with time. The condition may develop to reach a blockage in these arteries, so how do arterial blockages occur in a man?

How does arterial blockage occur in a man?

The blockage begins with the accumulation of fatty deposits on the arterial walls, causing them to be slightly injured.
In an attempt to treat this infection, the cells begin to secrete chemicals that make the walls more viscous, causing other blood-borne substances to stick to them, such as: inflammatory cells, proteins, and calcium. Fat accumulates with these substances to form plaques or what is known as atherosclerosis.
Arteriosclerosis is the most common cause of arterial blockage in a man, as these fatty plaques accumulate inside the arteries enough to narrow them, which impedes blood flow, and over time
The plaques may become brittle or inflamed and lead to a rupture, which in turn causes the formation of a blood clot that increases the narrowing of the artery or may close it completely.
Therefore, the accumulation of plaques or the formation of blood clots that settle in the narrowed artery may lead to clogged arteries in the leg, and when the blockage occurs, this causes permanent tissue damage and then eventually death.

Symptoms of arterial blockage in a man

If this blockage remains in a man's arteries, he may cause the following symptoms:

Feeling pain.
Changes in skin color.
Difficulty walking.
Infections and ulcers in the leg.
Gangrene and men lose due to a complete blood circulation.

Factors that increase the risk of arterial blockage in a man

People with the following are more likely to have arterial blockages:
Men over 50 years old, but women can also get it.
Heart diseases, such as: coronary artery disease.
Hypertension.
Kidney disease, especially cases that need dialysis.
Smoking.
Stroke (cerebral vascular disease).
High cholesterol in the blood.
Obesity concentrated in the abdomen.

Treatment of clogged arteries in the leg

Although there is no cure for peripheral artery disease, quitting smoking and exercising regularly, reducing fat, eating a healthy diet, and managing your risk factors can help limit disease progression.
But when the blockage occurs, surgical treatment will be used, which includes the following:
Balloon angioplasty: A miniature balloon is passed to the arteries through the catheter, and when the balloon expands inside the artery, it presses the plaques and opens the artery.
Stents: These are small metal support files that are inserted into the arteries through a small opening using a catheter (long and thin tubes) without major surgery. Stents expand on the wall of the inner blood vessels to support and keep them open.
An artery bypass process, similar to a cardiac bypass, the surgeon uses a portion of a patient’s healthy vein or an artificial alternative to create a bypass from the blocked area in a man’s arteries
